A Brief History of Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church
Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church has served the Highlandtown community of Baltimore for more than a century. The congregation traces its beginnings to the early 1900s and was formally incorporated in LCMS on 1908. Throughout its history, Nazareth has proclaimed the Gospel, administered the Sacraments, provided Christian education, and sought to serve the changing needs of its neighborhood.
Highlandtown Baltimore itself has continually changed. Once home especially to German and other European immigrant communities - including Italian, Greek, and Polish families - the neighborhood gradually became home to a growing Hispanic population. Nazareth’s ministry has likewise adapted to serve the people whom God has placed around the congregation.
