Lord's Supper

What is the Lord's Supper?

"It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink."

What is the benefit of this?

This eating and drinking is for the strengthening of faith and the forgiveness of sin through Jesus Christ our Lord who first gave us His body and blood as an atoning sacrifice on the cross.

How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things?

"Certainly not just easting and drinking do these things, but the words written here: 'Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins" These words, along with the bodily eating and drinking, are the main thing in the Sacrament.  Whoever believes these words has exactly what they say: 'forgiveness of sins'."

Who receives this sacrament worthily?

We understand the Lord's Supper to be the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and a confession of agreement in faith between the church and participating member.  Therefore, we ask that only baptized and confirmed members of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod participate in communion at Saint James.  We encourage those visiting to talk with the Pastor before service, concerning participation in communion or the reception of a baptismal blessing.
